My name is Hylke Bons.
I am a digital designer based in London.

I’m a bit of a Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to design. I cover everything from User Experience, User Interface, Web, and Graphic Design to brand, illustration, photography, and copywriting. I believe you can build something great by looking at all of these pieces together.

What I do

I help people, Open Source projects, and companies create elegant and useful designs to make products better. I pay attention to the little details that matter, without losing sight of the bigger picture.

Design isn’t just aesthetics, it’s how things act and work

I like being involved in all aspects of a project. I believe working on the boundaries and not limiting yourself to a certain field delivers better work through cooperation with everyone involved. I’m also not afraid to get my hands dirty with programming every now and then. Design is an iterative process and doesn’t end after specifications or graphics are delivered.

What I care about

In my everyday design process I try to use Free and Open Source software tools as much as possible. Applications such as Inkscape and The GIMP are my main tools of the trade. I believe knowledge should be free and available to everybody. In that fashion I think you should own and have full control over the work that you commission, including the tools needed to reproduce the process.

I’m against the vendor lock-ins that are all too common in the design world. Everything I do is delivered in formats using Open Standards. When you work with me you pay for skill, time, and experience; not usage rights or royalties.
